- Subject: Kermit Problem with Z100 MS-DOS2 Solved
-
- Thanks to all those who responed to my request for help with Kermit on
- MS-DOS2. My version of Kermit worked fine on ZDOS, but failed when I
- tried to use it with DOS2. Apparently, DOS2 causes the Z100 to drop
- the data terminal ready (DTR) signal to the modem when Kermit attempts
- to receive a file. The modem interpets this as a signal to quit and
- drops the telephone line. By optioning the modem to ignore the DTR
- signal from the Z100, I now have kermit working properly.

- Greetings!
-
- I recently FTP'd a copy of Kermit for the Zenith Z-100 from Columbia since I'm
- not quite satisfied with the performance of other Z-100 terminal emulators
- I've tried. I often use my Z-100 as a terminal to our agency's Prime mini,
- and two machines on the University of Washington campus (a Cyber running NOS
- and a VAX running Berkeley Unix). I really like what I've seen so far! I
- have a few questions about some particulars that I can't seem to answer from
- the manuals, and I hope that you can help me.
-
- 1) First of all, is Version 2.29 the most recent version for the Z-100? The
- MSKERMIT manual I have a copy of mentions 2.31 for PC-compatibles and some
- other machines, but is unclear what the highest version available for my
- machine is.
-
- 2) I COMMEND you on the accurate Heath terminal emulation. You'd be surprised
- how many other packages can't get the function keys right. Until now, I
- sorely missed my Z29 terminal. But I can't figure out one thing; how to
- trigger the ANSI mode of the Heath setting. Our Prime insists on VT100/ANSI
- terminals for screen-oriented applications like Mail, spread- sheets and the
- screen editor. The docs mentions that the ESC < sequence will trigger ANSI
- emulation (the [ style commands), but I don't know how to actually do it. Is
- the sequence sent from the Prime itself, or can I trigger it from Kermit?
-
- 3) The docs mention that SET KEY won't work when using Heath emulation. I
- can't seem to get it to say anything but "Invalid command" even when I set
- terminal to NONE. I connect to these mainframes over a single local switch
- that needs to see a triple-break sequence within two seconds to drop the
- connection. It's possible, but difficult to type CTRL [ B three times in
- succession within that timeframe. I'd like to assign the BREAK code to a
- single key ("BREAK" key comes to mind, or F0, or F1). Is this do-able?
-
- 4) I have no trouble transferring files to the Cuber and VAX machines using
- this version or even other terminal emulation packages (like BESTERM) with the
- Kermit protocol. But I can't Kermit files to our Prime. The odd thing is, I
- *can* using a PC-compatible and Procomm by putting the Prime into server mode.
- I think I've tried all combinations of client and server and Kermit finally
- times out after 10 (?) retries with no activity. Perhaps we need a newer
- version of Kermit for the Prime. The version command reports "Public Domain
- version 7.5.7" as I recall. Is there a more recent release for a Prime
- running Version 19 (and almost ready for version 20) of Primos?
-
- Thanks for the help. I know I ask a lot of questions, and I appreciate any
- responses you may have time to put together.

-
- I got a beta copy of Version 2.31 from Columbia after Drew Derbyshire pointed
- it out to me (MSTZ10.BOO). The SET ESCAPE command works just fine in that
- version, and Shift-BREAK send a long break, which apparently is just long
- enough for our switch to disconnect properly. The Z-100 community is *very*
- fortunate to have someone like Drew keeping good software current for us!
-
- There were a few things in 2.31 that don't work out too well, all (I'm fiarly
- sure) to do with the fact that I'm running at 9600 baud over a direct-connect
- line. I've been in contact with Drew and sent him some specifics, and he's
- working on them now. (By the way, the fact that I can't spell "fairly"
- correctly, as in "fairly well" has less to do with the early hour out here in
- Washington state and more to do with the fact that my keyboard often suffers
- fom "n-finger rollover"!)
-
- I don't know why my Prime transfers weren't working before, but they work just
- fine now. It might have been a problem with server mode. When I transfer
- "manually" (SEND from one, RECE from the other), it works fine!
-
- Thank you for your concern. Keep up the good work on Kermit!!
